Pride organizer says, “We are not going to be focusing on hate this weekend.”

The 2nd Annual Pikeville Pride will begin this Saturday in the Pikeville City Park starting at noon and ending at 5 PM. Member of the Pikeville Pride Committee Gina Bryant says that everyone coming out and showing their support to events like this means everything to her. Bryant states that growing up in a rural area, most members of the LGBTQ community feel like they will never be accepted for who they are. She goes on to say that some people in the community do not approve of this event or share their values, “but we are not going to be focusing on hate this weekend.” Pikeville Pride Supporter Sarah Norman says that being raised in the “bible belt”, she wasn’t as supportive as she should have been. Norman mentions that when she attended the first Pikeville Pride by volunteering to give out free hugs, she was in awe at how many members of the LGBTQ community aren’t accepted by their family.
