Buchanan County, VA — A missing man has been found alive after being trapped in his crashed vehicle for nearly 24 hours on Elkins Branch Road in Buchanan County, Virginia. According to the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office, 67-year-old Richard David Chafin was reported missing by family members Monday night after not returning home from a trip to Grundy. Family and friends had conducted a search and then contacted authorities. Tuesday morning, Investigators and Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office along with Virginia State Police Troopers coordinated together and was assisted by the Virginia State Police Med-Flight Helicopter to search the route that Chafin would have taken to travel to Grundy. Pilots in the helicopter spotted fresh scrape marks and vehicle debris leading over a steep embankment. Ground crews found Chafin’s vehicle on its top with Chafin trapped inside. The vehicle was not visible from the roadway. Buchanan County Sheriff Ray Foster said Chafin was found to have minor injuries, but he was flown to Bristol Regional Medical Center for observation as a precaution. The Virginia State Police is investigating the cause of the crash. Also assisting at the scene were members of the Grundy Fire Department, Slate Creek Fire Department, Russell Prater Fire and Rescue and Rescue 33 Ambulance Service.
