FRANKFORT, Ky. — The number of deaths now confirmed to be attributed to flash flooding across Eastern Kentucky is now up to 37, Gov. Andy Beshear announced Monday evening.

The governor made that announcement over social media and asked for continued prayers for the victims.

Deaths by county include:

• Knott County, 17

• Perry County, 7
• Letcher County, 3

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear announced that the number of deaths related to widespread flash flooding across has risen once again, even as he says many more remain unaccounted for.

The death toll is now up to 30, broken down across the following counties:

• 16 in Knott County, including four children from one family
• 7 in Breathitt County
• 3 in Perry County
• 2 in Letcher County
• 2 in Clay County

That number is expected to increase, as Beshear said there are still “hundreds of people who are not accounted for — minimum.” However, Beshear said the state is not able to say how many people are missing.

“There are a lot of reasons why it is nearly impossible,” Beshear said. “I want to make sure we’re not giving out false hope or faulty information.”

For the second time of the day, Gov. Andy Beshear on Sunday reported additional deaths in the wake of historic flash flooding across Eastern Kentucky.

The governor reported that 28 deaths have now been confirmed as a result of flooding. Counties reporting deaths include:

FRANKFORT, Ky. — The death toll from flash flooding across Eastern Kentucky has now reached 26, Gov. Andy Beshear announced on social media.

“[A]nd that number will increase,” Beshear said. “There is widespread damage with many families displaced and more rain expected throughout the next day.”

The governor said more bodies have been found, but they are awaiting confirmation before increasing the total.

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Gov. Andy Beshear announced Saturday that the number of deaths related to flash flooding across Eastern Kentucky is now at 25.

And with operations still in the search-and-rescue phase, he says that number is expected to climb even higher.

Deaths by county include:

• 14 in Knott County, including four children from one family
• 4 in Breathitt County
• 3 in Perry County
• 2 in Letcher County
• 2 in Clay County

The governor also highlighted the rescue effort, noting that the Kentucky Air National Guard has rescued 404 people by aircraft and the National Guard has rescued 19 people and two dogs by boat. Kentucky State Police has assisted in 624 water rescues, while the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife has assisted in 125. The Tennessee National Guard has rescued an additional 224 people and the West Virginia National Guard has rescued 36 while assisting Kentucky.

Gov . Beshear also reported that the TeamEKYFloodReliefFund.ky.gov website has received 5,673 donations totaling $684,688. He added that the first expenditure the fund will make is for funerals for those killed in yhe floods.

FRANKFORT, Ky. — The number of those killed in historic flash flooding across Eastern Kentucky continues to rise, with the total now up to 16.

Gov. Andy Beshear announced that number during a press conference in Frankfort Friday morning. That number includes 11 deaths in Knott County, two in Letcher, two in Clay and one in Perry.

“That number is going to get a lot higher,” the governor warned.

Among the dead in Knott County are two children, who were among four siblings swept away in floodwaters Thursday. The other two children remain missing.

VERDUNVILLE, W.Va. — A Logan County man suspected in the shooting deaths of his parents later died in a shootout with police.

It all began late Monday morning, when gunshots were reported at a home at Dingess Mountain. When deputies arrived at the home, they found the bodies of Shawn Dempsey Sr. and Karen Sue Dempsey, both 52 years old, dead of gunshot wounds.

An investigation led to deputies identifying the couple’s son, 32-year-old Shawn Dempsey Jr., as a suspect.

The younger Dempsey was later spotted in Wayne County and led police on a chase to Mare Drive, in Mingo County. There, police say Dempsey’s vehicle became inoperable.

They say he then pulled a gun and fired at police. Officers returned fire, killing him.

The murder investigation is being conducted by the Logan County Sheriff’s Office. West Virginia State Police is investigating the shootout between Dempsey and officers.
