Fishtrap Dam holding water to protect downstream areas

MILLARD, Ky. – As river levels on the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River in Pikeville and Prestonsburg continued to rise over the weekend, officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers continuously monitored the situation. At Fishtrap Dam, the decision was made to close the gates at the spillway and begin holding water back. As of Sunday evening, the water level in the lake was about 10 feet above summer pool and not yet into the parking lot at the Millard boat ramp. Corps officials say they will continue holding water until any flooding threat downstream has passed.

Corps of Engineers officials at Fishtrap Dam monitoring water levels

MILLARD, Ky. – Heavy rain that has fallen over the past several days, with more in the forecast has all eyes on streams and rivers across eastern Kentucky. In Pikeville, the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River is running high, and officials with the US Army Corps of Engineers at Fishtrap Dam are constantly monitoring the situation. Natural Resource Specialist Brett Salyers says at this point, the gates at the spillway are more than halfway open, which is actually a good sign for communities downstream. However, with more heavy rain in the forecast Friday night and Saturday, officials say there is the possibility of a renewed threat of flooding. EKB News will stay in contact with Corps of Engineers officials and issue updates if conditions change.

Fishtrap Dam passes inspection

This week, more than a dozen engineers with the US Army Corps of Engineers were in Pike County, conducting a thorough inspection of Fishtrap Dam. It was an inspection that is only done every five years, and EKB News reporter Shannon Deskins was there and brings us this report.
