]]> A bill that will increase benefits to the families of police officers killed in the line of duty is moving closer to completion. This week, the Senate State and Local Government Committee passed House Bill 185, which would give spouses of fallen officers 75 percent of the officer’s monthly salary, as opposed to the current law of 25 percent. It would also provide health insurance for the spouse and children. Sponsor of the bill, Representative John Blanton, says this bill is expected to pass quickly, and is being welcomed into the Senate.  The emergency clause in the bill also will ensure that Pikeville Police Officer Scotty Hamilton’s wife, Chelsi and daughter Brynlee will be taken care of.  The bill is expected to be voted on in the full senate on Thursday.

]]> The funeral for fallen Pikeville Police Officer Scotty Hamilton is now behind us, and his fellow officers are adjusting to work without him.  However, lawmakers in Frankfort have not forgotten about Officer Hamilton or the family he left behind. A bill making its way from the House to the Senate seeks to more than double the death benefits of Kentucky police Officers, firefighters and other state workers killed in the line of duty. The sponsor of House Bill 185, Representative John Blanton, says this legislation is personal to him, after spending 22 years serving as a Kentucky State Trooper.  If passed, Officer Hamilton’s widow, Chelsi, will receive 75 percent of Scotty Hamilton’s salary…up from the current amount of 25 percent.
