At Tuesday’s fiscal court meeting, Pike County’s magistrates voted unanimously to apply for a Kentucky Homeland Security grant to purchase the equipment. The issue was first brought up last week, but court members were concerned with the initially-projected $20,000-cost for installing the equipment.

Solid Waste Commissioner Bobby Mullins told the court on Tuesday that the grant will cover the cost of installation if it is awarded to the county.

Mullins told the court the equipment, which will scan truckloads of waste brought into the landfill for the presence of low-level radioactive material, will help the county meet new requirements for the detection and proper disposal of radioactive waste.
