WASHINGTON, D.C. — Outbreaks of two bacterial infections have prompted Abbott Nutrition to voluntarily recall three of its powdered infant formulas.

The recall affects specific batches of powdered Similac, EleCare and Alimentum manufactured at the company’s Sturgis, Mich., plant.

The recall was prompted after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration began investigating consumer complaints of four Salmonella Newport and Cronobacter sakazakii infections in three states.

Consumers can check to see if they have purchased affected products by examining the codes on the bottom of the package. Formulas are covered by the recall if:

  • the first two digits of the code are 22 through 37; and
  • the code on the container contains K8, SH or Z2; and
  • the expiration date is 4-1-2022 (APR 2022) or later.

Consumers can also check to see if they have purchase affected products by visiting similacrecall.com or calling (800) 986-8540.

Cronobacter bacteria can cause severe, life-threatening infections (sepsis) or meningitis (an inflammation of the membranes that protect the brain and spine). Symptoms of sepsis and meningitis may include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice (yellow skin and whites of the eyes), grunting breaths and abnormal movements. Cronobacter infection may also cause bowel damage and may spread through the blood to other parts of the body.

Salmonella are a group of bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever called salmonellosis. Most people with salmonellosis develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. More severe cases of salmonellosis may include a high fever, aches, headaches, lethargy, a rash, blood in the urine or stool, and in some cases, may become fatal.

The voluntary recall includes select 1 oz., 1 1/2 oz., 2 5/8 oz., 7 3/4 oz., 12 1/2 oz., 15 1/2 oz. bags of Lay’s Barbecue Flavored Potato Chips. This recall includes both individual barbecue flavored chips and variety packs that contain the barbecue flavor.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product contained inside the recalled bags.

The products covered by this recall were distributed in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming to retail stores and via foodservice, vending, e-commerce, mail distribution and other channels.

Columbus, OH — Breakstone’s has recalled 9,500 cases of cottage cheese due to the potential presence of pieces of red plastic and metal inside the product. The company discovered the issue after a customer contacted them after discovering pieces of red plastic inside a container of cottage cheese. There have been six other complaints and no reports of illness or injury related to this issue, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The products subject to recall are:

Washington DC — About 2 million pounds of seasoned beef used in Taco Bell burritos and tacos have been removed from restaurant locations across the country. Kenosha Beef International recalled the products over concerns that they may be contaminated with metal shavings, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said in a news release. The bags of meat were shipped from the supplier to five distribution centers and then to restaurant locations across the country, the USDA said. The restaurant chain had announced it was voluntarily recalling about 2.3 million pounds of seasoned beef. By Monday night, 100% of the product had been removed from all restaurants across 21 states, a Taco bell news release said. The beef products were produced from September 20 to October 4, the USDA said. There have been no confirmed reports of reactions from the products, the department said, adding “anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.” Officials discovered the problem after a customer complained of having found a metal shaving in their food, the food chain’s news release said.

Mt. Prospect, IL — The owner of Ragú is recalling some of its jars of pasta sauce over the possibility that they may contain plastic fragments, the company said.
Mizkan America said Saturday it has no reports of injuries or complaints, and was launching the recall voluntarily “out of an abundance of caution.”

The affected products are:
45-ounce chunky tomato, garlic & onion, with a June 6, 2020, best-by date
66-ounce chunky tomato, garlic & onion, with a June 5, 2020, best-by date
66-ounce chunky tomato, garlic & onion, with a June 6, 2020, best-by date
66-ounce old world style traditional, with a June 4, 2020, best-by date
66-ounce old world style meat, with a June 5, 2020, best-by date

The sauces, produced earlier this month, were distributed nationally, the company said.
