ATLANTA, Ga. — Officials with the Food and Drug Administration say a salmonella outbreak that has sickened nearly 400 people in 31 states — including Kentucky and Virginia — has been linked to red onions from Thomson International.

While the problem originates in red onions, customers are advised to avoid all onions shipped by Thomson International since May 1 because of the possibility of cross-contamination. That includes white, yellow and yellow sweet varieties.

The onions were sold under the brand names

• Thomson International
• Tender Loving Care
• El Competitor
• Hartley’s Best
• Onions 52
• Majestic
• Imperial Fresh
• Kroger
• Utah Onions
• Food Lion

If you have onions but do not know their brand, you should throw them out.

Salmonella causes serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and the frail. Healthy people infected by the bacteria can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
