BETSY LAYNE, Ky. — A Wise County man is facing a felony assault charge, for allegedly driving drunk when he was involved in an injury crash at Betsy Layne.

Deputies were called to the crash which occurred last Wednesday night. When they arrived, they found Carter Ferrell Willey, 23, of Wise, who the police report describes as smelling of alcohol and slurring his speech while being belligerent.

Willey denied that he was driving at the time of the crash, but witnesses at the scene and a passenger in his car all said he was. He also registered a blood-alcohol level of 0.204 on a breathalyzer, more than two-and-a-half times the legal limit.

Willey is now charged with first-degree assault, aggravated second-offense DUI and other charges. The assault charge is a felony, punishable by 10-to-20 years in prison.

He is being held on a $10,000 cash bond.

HAROLD, Ky. — A Floyd County man was taken to jail after he allegedly fled the scene of a DUI crash.

Deputies were called just before 3 Saturday morning to a report of a car on its top on Toler Creek Road. When they got there, they found the car still upside down, where it came to rest after apparently striking several trees and flipping a number of times. They found a woman in the passenger seat, but no driver.

The woman told police that Skyler Robinson, 22, of Harold, had been driving and she further said he was extremely under the influence. The woman told police Robinson said he “was going to jail” and then ran away.

Robinson was found a short distance away and he reportedly began apologizing immediately, saying he knew he was going away for awhile this time. He also told police he had drunk a pint of tequila, half a fifth of another liquor, and he couldn’t remember what else.

Robinson was arrested for second-offense DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, wanton endangerment and other charges.

PHELPS, Ky. — A Kentucky State Police trooper was involved in a crash Friday evening, on Route 194 near Phelps.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Michael Coleman confirmed the crash and said it involved two vehicles, with one of the vehicles being the trooper’s police cruiser. He described the crash as an injury accident, but he did not have details about the extent of the injuries.

Those involved in the crash have been taken to a hospital for treatment, but no identities have yet been released.

The crash is believed to have happened shortly after 7:30 p.m.

The roadway is closed at this time and likely will be for several hours, Coleman said.

McDOWELL, Ky. — A Floyd County man was killed Thursday following an accident involving an all-terrain vehicle.

The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office says Loren Herrington, 40, of McDowell, was operating an ATV at Ned’s Fork around 2 p.m., when the vehicle left the roadway and went over an embankment. He died at the scene.

The sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate the incident.

MARROWBONE, Ky. — Marrowbone Volunteer Fire Department is mourning the loss of one of its members.

Asst. Chief Clifford Brian Belcher, 47, of Elkhorn City, was killed Wednesday morning in a crash, Chief Clinard “Bubby” Adkins announced on his Facebook page.

“We have lost a great asset to our fire department and community,” Adkins said.

According to Kentucky State Police, Belcher was driving along Route 3174 at Greasy Creek just after 2 a.m., when his car left the roadway and overturned. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — One person is dead and another person remains in the hospital, after a motorcycle collided with a commercial vehicle on U.S. 23 Wednesday evening.

Pikeville Police say the motorcycle was changing lanes, when it clipped the truck. Two people were on the motorcycle when the crash occurred and both were ejected.

A female passenger on the bike died at the scene.

The man operating the bike was taken to Pikeville Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. There is no report on his condition.

The coal truck driver was not hurt.

The identities of those involved in the crash have not yet been released. The incident remains under investigation.

LOWMANSVILLE, Ky. — One person was killed in a collision with a log truck early Tuesday morning.

Lawrence County Coroner Wes Heston says the crash happened around 6 a.m. on U.S. 23 at Lowmansville. Heston says a pickup truck collided with a log truck and the driver of the pickup died at the scene.

The identities of those involved in the crash have not yet been released.

The case remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and the Lawrence County Coroner’s Office.

McCONNELL, W.Va. — A motorcycle rider was killed in a crash in Logan County early Monday morning.

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office reports that the man was operating a dirt bike on Hanging Rock Highway, near McConnell, just after 5 a.m. The man came upon a rock slide and fallen tree. He was unable to stop his bike in time, hit the tree and was ejected from the motorcycle.

He died at the scene.

The man had no ID cards on him and police are still working to learn his identity.

ELKHORN CITY, Ky. — A Pike County man is dead following a single-car crash last Friday.

According to Kentucky State Police, Chase Caudill, 20, of Feds Creek was driving along U.S. 460 just after 10:30 Friday night, when his 2012 Ford Mustang left the roadway and struck an embankment.

Caudill was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The incident remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police.

ELKHORN CITY, Ky. — One person was killed in a collision between a school bus and a commercial vehicle Monday near Elkhorn City.

Police say Wesley Childers, 32, of Draffin, was driving an empty school bus on Elkhorn Creek, when he crossed the center line and struck a Little Debbie delivery truck.

The driver of the delivery truck, Anthony Kirk, 26, of Williamson, W.Va., died at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police.
