SOUTH WILLIAMSON, Ky. — Kentucky State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash in Pike County.

Troopers say it happened around 8:30 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 119 in South Williamson. Investigators say a black Audi A3 was heading south when Meghan Jones, 36, of Williamson, W.Va., tried to cross the road and was struck.
Jones was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pike County Coroner’s Office.
KSP’s accident reconstruction team is handling the investigation.

POUND, Va. — A police chase that began in Hazard and went into Virginia came to a tragic end on Wednesday.

Police across the region were on the lookout for a silver Audi with North Carolina plates that was wanted in connection with a theft case. Wise County deputies spotted the car on U.S. 23 at Pound and got behind it, causing the driver to speed away.

Police say the driver fled recklessly at a high rate of speed and was able to avoid several police attempts to stop the vehicle. After the car moved into oncoming traffic, narrowly missing several cars, police were able to corral it back into the correct lanes before the driver suddenly moved into oncoming traffic once again, striking another car head-on.

One person was killed in the resulting crash. Four others were taken to local hospitals for treatment of injuries.

Due to the ongoing investigation, no names have been released at this time.

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — A Floyd County man is dead after police say he walked into the path of an oncoming car.

According to Kentucky State Police, Jerad Montgomery, 42, of Hi Hat, was driving a Kia Sorrento along Route 114 just after 11 p.m. Saturday, when Dewey Lewis, 36, of Prestonsburg, walked into his path.

Lewis died at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.

LOWMANSVILLE, Ky. — One person was killed in a collision with a log truck early Tuesday morning.

Lawrence County Coroner Wes Heston says the crash happened around 6 a.m. on U.S. 23 at Lowmansville. Heston says a pickup truck collided with a log truck and the driver of the pickup died at the scene.

The identities of those involved in the crash have not yet been released.

The case remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and the Lawrence County Coroner’s Office.

IVEL, Ky. — A pedestrian who was hit by a car on U.S. 23 at Ivel Monday night has died.

According to Kentucky State Police, James Boyd, 65, of Garrett, walked into the path of a Toyota RAV4 driven by Nathan Egler, 26, of Evansville, Ind., just after 8 p.m., near the Alpike Motel and was struck.

Boyd was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died of his injuries.

The incident remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police.

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Police have released the identity of a man who was killed after being struck by a car along U.S. 23 over the weekend.

Around 3 p.m., Saturday, Keene Michael Johnson, 44, of Pikeville, was struck by a car traveling south on U.S. 23, near the Community Trust Bank tower.

Police, fire and EMS units were sent to the scene, as was the Pike County Coroner’s Office, which pronounced Johnson dead at the scene.

The driver of the car was not injured.

Police say they do not expect any charges to be filed at this time.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Mine Safety and Health Administration says a Logan County underground mine operator “engaged in aggravated conduct constituting more than ordinary negligence” prior to the death of a maintenance worker who crashed his electric utility vehicle back in November.

Brian Wallen, 49, an assistant maintenance shift supervisor at Mingo Logan Coal’s Mountaineer 2 Mine at Sharples, was killed Nov. 1 when his brakes failed.

MSHA said the mine operator failed to remove the vehicle from service, despite identifying a defective braking system on three separate occasions prior to the accident. Among other problems, MSHA said the left rear brake caliper was broken off prior to the accident and was tied to the vehicle’s frame with a plastic cable zip tie.

The operator was ordered to conduct pre-operation checks for safety defects on mobile equipment and to remove equipment from service immediately if safety defects are found.

UPDATE, 3 p.m. — Police have now released details of the crash that killed a Prestonsburg man this morning.

It happened around 7 a.m. on U.S. 23 at Watergap, near the Route 80 interchange.

Prestonsburg Police say Steven Newsome, of Virgie, was driving a Dodge Ram along U.S. 23 when he began experiencing a medical emergency.

Police were soon flooded with calls of Newsome’s vehicle swerving all over the road and driving in the wrong lane of traffic.

Eventually, Newsome’s truck collided head-on with a Chevrolet Colorado driven by Jerome Jenkins, of Prestonsburg. Jenkins died at the scene.

Newsome was taken to Highlands ARH, where he is said to be in stable condition. Police say he is cooperating with their investigation.

Police say no foul play is suspected, but they will present all evidence to a grand jury at the close of their investigation.

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — One person is dead following a crash this morning near Prestonsburg.

It happened along U.S. 23 at Watergap, near the Route 80 interchange.

Floyd County Coroner Greg Nelson confirmed to Mountain Top News that one person was killed in the crash.

No other details have been released.

The crash is causing significant delays for motorists traveling in the area. Traffic is being directed along Route 1428, between Prestonsburg and Allen, to get around the scene. That had cars traveling in both directions backed up to the Emma Bridge earlier this morning.

EDGARTON, W.Va. — Mingo County first responders were called to a report of a man who had been hit by a train.

It happened around 7 o’clock this morning in the community of Edgarton, which is just across the river from Freeburn.

The man was declared dead at the scene.

Deputies are continuing to investigate the incident and are working to identify him.

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Two people are dead following a pair of single-vehicle crashes in the Big Sandy Valley in recent days.

The first occurred last Wednesday on Indian Creek Road at Virgie. Just after 5 p.m., Michael Tackett, 51, of Virgie, was driving when his vehicle went off the roadd and struck a rock embankment and a tree.

He died at the scene.

The second occurred Friday afternoon, along U.S. 23 at Betsy Layne. Police say a car struck a rock embankment, resulting in both occupants of the car being ejected.
Casey Brown, 37, of Betsy Layne, died at the scene. Cammie Little, 34, of Pikeville, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries.
Kentucky State Police Post 9 in Pikeville continues to investigate both incidents.
