<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Troopers say it happened around 8:30 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 119 in South Williamson. Investigators say a black Audi A3 was heading south when Meghan Jones, 36, of Williamson, W.Va., tried to cross the road and was struck.<br>Jones was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pike County Coroner’s Office.<br>KSP’s accident reconstruction team is handling the investigation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">POUND, Va. &#8212; A police chase that began in Hazard and went into Virginia came to a tragic end on Wednesday.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Police across the region were on the lookout for a silver Audi with North Carolina plates that was wanted in connection with a theft case. Wise County deputies spotted the car on U.S. 23 at Pound and got behind it, causing the driver to speed away.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Police say the driver fled recklessly at a high rate of speed and was able to avoid several police attempts to stop the vehicle. After the car moved into oncoming traffic, narrowly missing several cars, police were able to corral it back into the correct lanes before the driver suddenly moved into oncoming traffic once again, striking another car head-on.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One person was killed in the resulting crash. Four others were taken to local hospitals for treatment of injuries.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Due to the ongoing investigation, no names have been released at this time.</p>

Among other problems, MSHA said the left rear brake caliper was broken off prior to the accident and was tied to the vehicle’s frame with a plastic cable zip tie.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Floyd County Coroner Greg Nelson confirmed to Mountain Top News that one person was killed in the crash.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">PIKEVILLE, Ky. &#8212; Two people are dead following a pair of single-vehicle crashes in the Big Sandy Valley in recent days.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first occurred last Wednesday on Indian Creek Road at Virgie. Just after 5 p.m., Michael Tackett, 51, of Virgie, was driving when his vehicle went off the roadd and struck a rock embankment and a tree.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He died at the scene.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The second occurred Friday afternoon, along U.S. 23 at Betsy Layne. Police say a car struck a rock embankment, resulting in both occupants of the car being ejected.<br>Casey Brown, 37, of Betsy Layne, died at the scene. Cammie Little, 34, of Pikeville, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries.<br>Kentucky State Police Post 9 in Pikeville continues to investigate both incidents.</p>
