]]> Frankfort, KY — Longtime Kentucky state Sen. Dan Seum says he is retiring. The Louisville Republican sent a letter to Gov. Matt Bevin on Thursday saying he will retire from his seat Nov. 16. Seum’s retirement would end a 35-year career in the Kentucky General Assembly. The 80-year-old Seum crossed party lines in August and endorsed Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear in his race for governor against Bevin, a fellow Republican. In a video announcing his support for Beshear, Seum blasted the governor’s handling of the state pension issue and Bevin’s high-profile feud with some public education groups. Seum served in the state House as a Democrat from 1982 to 1988, before moving to the Senate. Seum switched to GOP in 1999, giving Republicans majority control of the chamber.

]]> PIKEVILLE, Ky. –  The votes are in for the Kentucky State Senate 31st District special election, and it was a close one. Republican Phillip Wheeler will be the new State Senator for the 31st District.

In Martin County, Phillip Wheeler defeated the democratic candidate Darrell Pugh by a vote of 688 to 265. In Morgan County, Darrell Pugh edged out Phillip Wheeler 671 to 609. Over in Lawrence County, Wheeler came out ahead by a vote of 1,182 to Pugh’s 795 votes.  In Elliott County, Darrell Pugh won by a vote of 450 to Wheeler’s 168.  In Pike County,  Wheeler defeated Pugh by a vote of 4,691 to 4,475.  With the total numbers we have, and we stress these are unofficial, Phillip Wheeler defeated Darrell Pugh by a vote of 7, 338 to 6, 656.

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Countywide races are on the ballot and Pike County residents are already getting a preview, with one familiar name appearing on the ballot in an unfamiliar place. RAYKentucky State Senator Ray S. Jones II has filed a letter of intent with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance stating his intention to run for Pike County Judge Executive. Jones has been elected as State Senator for the 31st District for 17 years. He says, now that he has a family and his children are older, he would like to focus more on the county as a whole. He says at this point his children would not be able to stay here and make a living and that’s discouraging. Jones says Pike County is the hub of eastern Kentucky with the best medical care, banking and education. Jones adds, Pike County has a bright future but the county government needs to work towards job creation and with his background he feels he would be able to bring jobs to the county.
