Woman killed in early-morning crash

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — One woman was killed a single-vehicle crash over the weekend.

Pikeville Police say the accident happened just before 5:30 Sunday morning, on U.S. 23, near Sen. Kelsey Friend Boulevard. Police say when they arrived, they found the car on its top and one occupant, later identified as Amanda R. Blevins, ejected from the vehicle.

Blevins and three other occupants were taken to Pikeville Medical Center. Blevins died upon arrival at the hospital.

The incident remains under investigation.

Paving begins on US 23 in Pikeville, Kentucky

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (MTN) — Paving and construction have begun on US 23 South in Pikeville, Kentucky.

According to a statement from Kentucky Highway District 12, this paving project will start at 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM and last for two to three weeks starting from Marion’s Branch to Island Creek.

This project will include thermoplastic striping and rumble strips and the work zone runs from mile point 20.720 to 22.941.

The statement continues to say that one lane will be closed in each direction at all times and the work zone speed limit is reduced to 45 miles per hour with law enforcement monitoring daily.

Numerous work crews are expected to be on location and motorists should proceed with caution while traveling through the work zone.

Highway map traces Kentucky’s music culture

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky’s latest official highway map is now available, and it includes specific routes highlighting the state’s music culture.

State transportation officials said the highway map has been a navigation aid for motorists since first published by the Transportation Cabinet in 1929. They said it has evolved over the years to include information about what Kentucky has to offer in recreation, food, adventure, history and the arts.

“Kentucky’s musical journey travels many roads,” the new map said.

That rich music culture is traceable along specific routes in Kentucky. Officials said those routes include the U.S. 23 “Country Music Highway” linking the birthplaces of such stars as Loretta Lynn, Dwight Yoakam, Patty Loveless, Ricky Skaggs, Tyler Childers and others.

The map also notes Kentucky natives Bill Monroe, father of Bluegrass Music; balladeer John Jacob Niles; folk singer Jean Ritchie; country’s Merle Travis; rockers Don and Phil Everly, and “newgrass” pioneer Sam Bush.

Boulder Causes Damage Falling Into Roadway

Pikeville, KY — Around 4:30 AM this morning, a boulder came off the hillside and broke into pieces on U.S. 23 between Harold and Kinnikinnick. Part of the boulder stayed in the northbound lanes and part of it went into the southbound lanes of traffic. Two vehicles were damaged in the incident, but no injuries were reported. All four lanes of traffic were cleared of rocks shortly after 7:00 AM. According to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 12 officials, Pikeville Police officers were on the scene quickly and directed traffic until all four lanes were cleared.

The US 23 southbound lanes in Johnson County will be repaved on August 14th

A repaving project will begin this Tuesday, August 13th in Johnson County on the southbound lanes of US 23. There will be cones and signs placed on Tuesday with the actual construction of the road beginning on Wednesday. Sara George, Information Officer of Highway District 12, states that this road work will start at the Lawrence County line up to the exit towards downtown Paintsville. There has been no time frame suggested when this work will finish, but all drivers should use caution when traveling in this area.

Recent heavy rains and flooding have caused some damage to the KY State Highway 1428 road. This road was mainly used as a shortcut from US 23 to multiple locations in Painstville. Mary Westfall-Holbrook, the Chief District Engineer of Highway District 12, states that they have already begun rebuilding and reinforcing this road so that they can prevent future problems from occurring.

Traffic delays possible on US 23 near Ivel slide

IVEL, Ky. – The mudslide that has changed the traffic pattern on US 23 in Floyd County is moving once again, which has prompted Highway District 12 officials to alert the public of possible traffic delays. For the past few weeks, all traffic on US 23 through Ivel has been diverted into the southbound lanes due to a large mud and rock slide. Monday morning, officials with Highway District 12 noticed mud and debris falling again. And, they want motorists to be aware that there may be moments when traffic is stopped. The speed limit through the area has been reduced to 45 miles per hour, and is considered a work zone, which means fines for speeding are doubled.

Truck carrying raw chicken overturns in Jenkins

First responders in Jenkins had a fowl mess to clean up late Sunday afternoon.

A truck carrying approximately 20 tons of raw, refrigerated chicken overturned at the junction of U.S. 23 and U.S. 119 on Pound Jenkins Mountain. The driver of the truck was not injured, but crews had to remove the chicken from the back of the truck in order to get the scene cleaned up.

Jenkins Police Officer Jim Stephens said the wreck occurred in an area known to ruffle the feathers of truckers. Vehicles traveling northbound on U.S. 23 turning onto U.S. 119 must negotiate a steep turn onto U.S. 119. The intersection has been the site of numerous tractor trailer wrecks.

Stephens said speed was likely a factor in Sunday’s wreck.

The roadway was closed for several hours Sunday while the scene was being cleared. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and no injuries were reported.

Jenkins Police concerned about slick curves on U.S. 23
