Lady Cougars heading to Lexington after claiming 14th Region title

WHITESBURG, Ky. – After defeating the Knott County Central Lady Patriots 43-37, the Letcher County Central Lady Cougars can now claim the 14th Region Championship title and a spot in the upcoming state tournament.

Tournament MVP Lady Cougars’ 6-foot tall center and forward Sadie Johnson led the way with 19 points while tacking on two blocks in the win.

It was the fourth-quarter when Johnson may have had the most impact on the game. She spurred the offense by sinking a key three-pointer and added a layup to reclaim the led and ultimate victory.

Earlier in district tournament play, Johnson also aided the Lady Cougars as they defeated Jenkins handily 70-30 by pulling down double-double with 12 rebounds along with 14 points to clinch the 53rd District Championship.

Joining Johnson for all-tournament honors were teammates Molly Caudill, Alli Bailey, and Kaylee Baker.

Letcher County will now face powerhouse Owensboro Catholic in the first round of Sixteen 16 play at Rupp Arena on Thursday, March 11. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
