PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — Officials with the State Medical Examiner’s Office have confirmed that a leg bone found Monday night at Dewey Lake is not human in origin, the Floyd County Coroner’s Office said on Tuesday.

The discovery resulted in a social media uproar, after a transcript of a 911 call reporting a “human leg with shoe” had been found at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park was shared.

Coroner Greg Nelson went to the scene to review the find and determined that the remains were biological but not human. He said he consulted with state officials Tuesday about the discovery and they agreed with his conclusion.

The coroner said the remains were very old and consisted of a bone that was larger than one found in a person.

“If I had to guess, I would say it belonged to an elk or a cow, something like that,” Nelson said. “It was very large.”

When asked about the shoe, Nelson said there was a shoe and witness said it was on the leg when it was discovered. However, he had no explanation for how it got there.

“I don’t know if someone just put it on there or it washed on there with the water currents,” Nelson said.
