Crash kills one near Jenkins

JENKINS, Ky. — A man is dead following a crash near Jenkins.

According to Kentucky State Police, the victim, identified as William Vanover, 25, of Jenkins, was killed in a crash Thursday evening along U.S. 119 near the highway’s intersection with U.S. 23. The victim was the driver of a Chevrolet Cavalier compact car, which was struck by a commercial vehicle.

According to Kentucky State Police Det. Scott Caudill, the vehicles involved in the crash were traveling northbound on U.S. 119 near the Payne Gap Freewill Baptist Church around 3 p.m. Thursday. Vanover, Caudill said, attempted to turn left off U.S. 119 onto Jim Banks Road, crossing the southbound lanes of the highway. Caudill said a second passenger vehicle, which was not struck in the crash, was traveling northbound between the victim’s vehicle and the commercial vehicle — a utility truck for electrical line contractor Volt Power. Caudill said the second passenger vehicle was reported to have come to an abrupt stop in the roadway.

Caudill said the driver of the commercial truck attempted to avoid colliding with the second passenger vehicle and turned his truck into the southbound lanes to avoid the collision. In doing so, Caudill said, the commercial vehicle struck Vanover’s vehicle in the driver’s side. Vanover’s vehicle and the commercial truck came to rest in the Payne Gap Freewill Baptist Church parking lot. Caudill said Vanover died at the scene of the crash.

The names of the driver of the commercial truck and the driver of the second passenger vehicle involved in the crash have not yet been released. Caudill said no charges have been filed in relation to the crash, which remains under investigation.

Caudill said weather was not a factor in the crash, as the incident happened during dry conditions.

U.S. 119 was closed for approximately five hours Thursday following the crash as investigators reconstructed the collision.
