Trailing in the polls with less than a week to go before West Virginia’s primary, former Massey Energy CEO and Republican Senate candidate Don Blankenship has gone on the attack in his latest campaign ad.
But he does not attack any of his opponents in the race, or even anyone in his own state. Instead, he goes after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, of Kentucky.

The video was posted Monday, but was taken down later that night, after news outlets began questioning why he called McConnell “Cocaine Mitch.” The ad reappeared yesterday, with an explanation that the name is a reference to McConnell’s Taiwanese father-in-law, who operates a large shipping company. The explanation further says the company was implicated in a scheme to smuggle cocaine from Columbia to Europe, after a ship carrying foreign coal was also found to contain $7 million in cocaine.
McConnell’s office has not responded to Blankenship’s allegations.
