PIKEVILLE, Ky. — This Thursday and Friday the Pike County Health Department will be distributing WIC fruit and veggie vouchers to be used at registered Kentucky farmers markets.
The vouchers, which will look like checks, can be used for fresh produce for anyone over five months old and already enrolled in the WIC program.
Each voucher is worth $4 and there will be a $20 limit per family.
“This is a neat expansion of the WIC program,” said WIC Coordinator with the Pike County Health Department Jan Johnson. “We always provide a dollar amount on their card each month to buy fresh fruits and vegetables from the grocery store. This is in addition to what they already get on the WIC program.”
Only participants who receive WIC from the Pike County Health Department in Pikeville will be eligible for the vouchers given out this week.
“We’ll be giving those on a walk-in basis,” added Johnson. “It’s first come, first served. We only have so many of them.”
Farmers with the Pikeville Farmers Market will be at the health department Thursday to offer a pop-up market.
“Jan will give a voucher to the WIC recipients and then we will double that price,” said Pikeville Farmers Market secretary Bridget Tackett. “So if they get a $4 voucher, they will have $8 to spend with us.”
Those registered at the Pike County Health Department in Belfry will be able to pick up vouchers at the Belfry location on July 19th and 20th.
