DISTRICT SOCCER ROUNDUP: Defending champs beat Cardinals

Prestonsburg’s Matt Burchett scored a pair of goals to lead the way as the Blackcats defeated the Martin County Cardinals, 5-1, on Wednesday night for 57th district boys’ soccer tournament action at StoneCrest Soccer Complex

It was the third win this season over Martin County.

Dylan Moore added one goal and assisted on three others as Prestonsburg improved to 13-1.

Bryan Amador and Ryan Rankin each added one goal while Preston Crase had one assist. Goalkeeper Jacob Martin was solid in holding the Cardinals to just a single goal.

The Cardinals lone goal came from Reece Merrill off and assist by Jestin Barker.

Goalkeeper Ethan Frey finished with 11 saves.

Both teams now move on to regional play beginning next week.

Letcher Central saw its soccer season come to an end as Hazard edged the Cougars, 3-2, in a match played on Wednesday.

Jordan Mullins, Dillon Callahan, and Jacob Butler each had one goal each for the Bulldogs, who advanced to face Perry Central in the finals.

Javier Polly had both goals for the Cougars, who finished the year at 2-7-1. Joseph Campbell and Zackary Cornett finished with one assist each.

Goalkeeper Nate Cook stopped 24 shots on goal in the loss.
