Dog-napping attempt results in failure, indictment

Ted Layne mugshotA young Pike County man is facing up to a decade in jail for an alleged burglary attempt gone doggone wrong.

19-year-old Ted Layne, of North Maynard Street near Justiceville, was indicted by a Pike County Grand Jury on Wednesday. Pike County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rick Bartley said Layne had been hired by a man to steal a dog the man believed belonged to him, but was in the possession of someone else. Unfortunately, for Layne, he made a serious mistake in address, and attempted to steal the wrong dog from the wrong residence.

The incident occurred on December 3, 2017.

Bartley said the man who hired Layne ordered him to go back to the correct house, and Layne eventually made off with the correct dog. Bartley said Layne was paid $200 for the job.

courthouseLayne was eventually determined by Pikeville Police to be a suspect in both break-ins, and, as a result of the break-in at the incorrect residence, he was indicted for second-degree burglary, punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Layne remains lodged in the Pike County Detention Center on charges not related to the indictment.

Neither the resident of the incorrect house, nor her dog were injured in the alleged burglary.

Bartley said ownership of the dog eventually taken by Layne will be determined in civil court, and the man who hired Layne to take possession of the dog will likely not face criminal charges. It was unclear who is currently in possession of the dog.
