Expect Unplanned Stops On US 23 At Ivel

Floyd County, KY — Work to remove additional rockfall threats on US 23 at Ivel began today after morning school traffic gets through the work zone. According to Mary Westfall-Holbrook, Highway District 12’s Chief District Engineer “This means that smaller rocks, trees, bushes, and other material may come down on the roadway. We are clearing surrounding material to prepare for removal of the two large boulders that would cause severe damage if they came down the hillside.” Westfall-Holbrook said that people driving on the highway cannot see these boulders and will not be able to see the crews working up above the roadway. Trees block the view and the activity will be well above the visible part of the slide. Westfall-Holbrook said to “Expect the unexpected. There will be unplanned traffic stops. Observe the speed limit, which is reduced to 45 miles per hour. Watch for flaggers, who will stop traffic if there is any chance that people or vehicles could be hit by flying rocks and debris.” The unplanned traffic stops will continue all week during the hours of 9:00 a.m. until dark each day.
