Paintsville, Ky: With the frequency of drug related crimes in the region police are constantly fighting the drug epidemic. That was obvious in Paintsville Saturday as five people were arrested for drug trafficking. The first incident began with an anonymous tip that 34-year old Stephen Ferguson was selling drugs from a Days Inn Motel room. Police say Ferguson was confronted about the call outside the motel room by Captain Holbrook of the Paintsville Police Department and gave officers permission to search the room. While searching they found several types of drug paraphernalia, cash, scales and small bags believed to be used to sell narcotics. Ferguson was arrested and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia and tampering with physical evidence. The second incident happened in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart Super Center a few hours later when Officer Zachary Mitchell of the Paintsville Police Department made a traffic stop and found the driver, 28-year old Kayla Simpkins of Salyersville, to have an active arrest warrant. After Simpkins gave officers permission to search the vehicle they found several syringes, small bags and approximately 2 grams of what is believed to be meth. Three passengers in the car, 27-year old Jeremy Johnson, 35-year old Rebecca Brown, and 27-year old Ronald Sammons all denied ownership of the drugs and all were charged with trafficking in a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.
