The 92-year-old Bush had been in failing health. On Sunday, it was announced she had decided not to seek continued medical treatment and would instead receive care to remain comfortable in her final days.

Bush was the wife of former President George H.W. Bush and mother of former President George W. Bush. She used her prominent position to serve as a champion for family literacy.

President Donald Trump’s office released a statement celebrating her life.

“As a wife, mother, grandmother, military spouse and former First Lady, Mrs. Bush was an advocate of the American family,” the statement read. “Amongst her greatest achievements was recognizing the importance of literacy as a fundamental family value that requires nurturing and protection. She will be long remembered for her strong devotion to country and family, both of which she served unfailingly.”

Bush is survived by her husband, five children and their spouses, 17 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and a brother.

A statement from her husband’s office said funeral arrangements would be announced as soon as practical.
