Indictment names alleged shooter in Letcher murder case

The three people taken into custody in the murder of a Letcher County man were indicted this week.

A Letcher County grand jury indicted 38-year-old Clifford Caudill, of Neon, on a murder charge in relation to the shooting death of 44-year-old Ricky Gibson, also of Neon. Two other people, 51-year-old Dedra Anne Keathley of Pike County and 33-year-old Clarence Brown, of Neon, were charged with complicity to murder in Gibson’s death.

Letcher Commonwealth’s Attorney Edison Banks said police believe Caudill is the person who actually shot and killed Gibson. He said Keathley and Brown also had a part in Gibson’s death. Police believe the three were using methamphetamine at Caudill’s residence when a dispute turned violent and Caudill shot and killed Gibson in a bathroom in the residence.

Gibson’s body was found in the Haymond area along a gas well road by police May 3 after he’d been missing for several days.

Caudill, Keathley and Brown were also charged with one count each of complicity to tampering with physical evidence for allegedly disposing of Gibson’s body after his death. Banks said by law, neither of the three are eligible for the death penalty in the case, but all three are eligible for life sentences if convicted on the charges related to the alleged murder.

All three remain lodged in the Letcher County Jail.
