Kentucky and Virginia Attorneys General have combined forces against Blackjewell L.L.C., sending a joint letter, urging immediate payment of all paychecks owed to employees. On Tuesday, the letter, signed by Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear and Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring was sent to the Office of the United States Trustee. 600 workers in Kentucky and nearly 500 in Virginia have not been paid since the first of the month when Blackjewel filed for bankruptcy. Beshear and Herring stated in the letter that irresponsible actions of Blackjewel officials left miners and their families without funds to meet mortgages, pay utility bills and purchase even basic living necessities. The Office of the United States Trustee is responsible for monitoring parties involved in bankruptcies and ensuring their compliance to bankruptcy law.
