A bill that will increase benefits to the families of police officers killed in the line of duty is moving closer to completion. This week, the Senate State and Local Government Committee passed House Bill 185, which would give spouses of fallen officers 75 percent of the officer’s monthly salary, as opposed to the current law of 25 percent. It would also provide health insurance for the spouse and children. Sponsor of the bill, Representative John Blanton, says this bill is expected to pass quickly, and is being welcomed into the Senate. The emergency clause in the bill also will ensure that Pikeville Police Officer Scotty Hamilton’s wife, Chelsi and daughter Brynlee will be taken care of. The bill is expected to be voted on in the full senate on Thursday.
