PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — Women around the region discussed leadership at an event in Prestonsburg Friday.
Big Sandy Community and Technical College hosted its 2nd Leading Ladies Regional Women’s Conference. The event was in partnership with the University of Pikeville on the Prestonsburg campus of Big Sandy.
The one-day event featured numerous speakers from the region, discussing a number of topics.
“The conference is designed to bring people together to learn about some resources that are available and some opportunities that they may have in the community,” said Sherry Zylka, president of Big Sandy Community and Technical College. “Also, to network and have some fellowship with women in the same situations.”
Participants discussed the role of women in the community, explored various leadership styles employed by successful women leaders and investigated barriers for women in leadership.
“The importance is getting people out into the community to understand what opportunities there are and to actually network,” added Zylka. “You never know where you’re going to make a connection that can lead to something bigger and better in your own life.”
Students were able to participate in the conference. An additional program for high school students was also included.
“Students participate in this program,” said Zylka. “It’s to help them understand what their options are and what possibilities there are in their life. A lot of times people don’t know or don’t see role models in the positions they don’t even know they can aspire to. So, getting them here on campus to hear what their opportunities, options and challenges are is very important.”
The conference was free and open to the public.
