Magoffin County, Ky.–It happened while a Magoffin County Sheriff’s Deputy was traveling on Coffey Branch in Grape Creek when he spotted a subject he knew to have outstanding warrants.
According to the arrest the citation, 28-year old Matthew Sparks of Salyersville saw the Deputy and ran. He was found behind a residence lying in the weeds.
Once Sparks was in custody he allegedly told the officer he had a gun in his back pocket. That’s when he attempted to run again while allegedly reaching for his back pocket. Sparks was quickly tased, but still refused to comply with the officers commands. He was tased two more times before he would comply.
Once Sparks was cuffed the officer took the gun and threw it. Sparks then began trying to kick, head butt and spit on the Deputy and had to be pepper sprayed.
He was later found to have in his possession what is believed to be meth, marijuana and syringes.
After being medically cleared from a local hospital Sparks was charged with 2nd degree assault of a police officer, fleeing and evading police, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, resisting arrest and menacing.
