Martin County Water files rate hike request

FRANKFORT, Ky. — As expected, Martin County Water District has filed an application with the Kentucky Public Service Commission, seeking a nearly 50 percent increase in rates.

Under the proposal, the minimum bill for most customers will rise from $26.50 per month to $39.62 for the first 2,000 gallons of water. Each 1,000 gallons after that would rise from $6.70 to $10.02.

The typical residential customer in Martin County uses 4,000 gallons a month, meaning the average bill would rise from $39.90 to $59.66, an increase of 49.5 percent.

If approved, the rate increase would generate an additional $901,000 in annual revenue, which the district says would allow to meet its monthly bills, retire long-term debt, and replace defective lines and meters.

The request is subject to review by the PSC.
