For decades, travelers were greeted with an RC Cola advertisement that declared “Welcome to Whitesburg … population 1534 friendly people, plus 2 grouches.”
The billboard sat along Jenkins Road, the former Ky hwy 15 at the back entrance to Whitesburg ARH Hospital. But on Wednesday, city officials took the billboard down after it was damaged by wind.
The billboard, however, wasn’t scrapped. It was preserved, and Whitesburg officials are working on a plan to re-erect the billboard in another location.
When the visible billboard came down, an even older Whitesburg billboard was revealed. Whitesburg Mayor James Craft said Whitesburg ARH hospital, on whose property the billboard sat, was instrumental in the billboard being preserved for so long. And he hopes that both billboard can soon rise again.
Once the billboard is erected again in a new location, visitors will once again be welcomed to the small mountain town … and the debate over just WHO those 2 grouches are can finally begin again.
