Yesterday, we told you about a campaign commercial by former Massey Energy CEO and Republican Senate candidate Don Blankenship, in which he says he will “ditch Cocaine Mitch” if elected. That was a reference to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and it was not the first time McConnell has become a target of the West Virginia Senate race.
Blankenship, in particular, has been highly critical of McConnell during the campaign, labeling him as the “swamp captain” who has pushed his party left and gave lukewarm support to the coal industry.
And it appears the animosity is mutual.
The McConnell-aligned Senate Leadership Fund super PAC last month launched another super PAC named the Mountain Families PAC, with the specific mission to defeat Blankenship. The group has spent over $1.3 million to run negative ads attacking Blankenship.
However, McConnell has not publicly responded to Blankenship’s attacks on him.
