PIKEVILLE, Ky. – An arctic blast is set to affect much of the country this week, including right here in our region. With temperatures expected in the single digits the next few nights, Pike County officials have announced the opening of several warming centers. Pike County Judge Executive Ray Jones’ office announced Monday that all Senior Citizens Centers throughout the county will be open both Tuesday and Wednesday night. Those locations are : Pikeville, Shelby Valley, Marrowbone, Elkhorn City, Kimper, Phelps, Blackberry and Belfry, and will be open from 6pm until 8am.
The Prestonsburg Church of God will also be open as a Community Warming Center Tuesday night, Wednesday night, and Thursday night from 8pm until 8am. They are located at 222 University Drive.
The city of Pikeville is also keeping an eye on the situation, and will open a warming center if the need arises. In the meantime, anyone in Pikeville in need of a warm shelter is encouraged to stop by the Westcare Emergency shelter just off Bypass road.
