PIKE COUNTY, Ky. — The Pike County Sheriff’s Office is making sure deputies and volunteers in the department are up-to-date on their certifications.

The sheriff’s office is required to take at least one training course a year and anyone who carries a firearm must be certified.

“We do this daytime course and then in the Fall, when the weather cools down, we’ll do a nighttime course which is a little more intense than this,” Pike County Sheriff Rodney Scott.

The training course is a one-day class. It takes about a week to get everyone trained and certified.

Sheriff Scott says the bailiffs in Pike County also participate in the training exercise.

“This is something that we take upon ourselves to do,” added Sheriff Scott. “We make sure everybody goes through it. The more practice they get at it, the better they’ll be. We qualify twice a year. This is for our certified guys and also for our volunteers.”

The Pike County Sheriff’s Office has nine certified deputies at this time and about 15 volunteers. There are three certified firearms instructors within the department.
