The Pike County School District will be beefing up its security, thanks to the Pike County Sheriff’s Office.
As officials continue to try to solve the puzzle of how to best protect students at school, Pike County is moving forward with placing deputies in the county’s five schools. Beginning Thursday, deputies will be assigned to each of Pike County’s five high schools, and they will also serve the elementary and middle schools in those high schools’ areas.
Pike County Sheriff Rodney Scott said the placement of the deputies is a temporary solution, and will bridge the gap to some volunteering school staff members being deputized and armed in the schools. Superintendent Reed Adkins said any armed staff member would be heavily vetted before being allowed to carry a gun in school.
Among that vetting, Adkins said, will be background checks, several drugs tests per year, certification and recertification and other requirements. But until then, Adkins said he is glad deputies will be in Pike County’s schools.
