PMC opens after-hours flu clinic

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Flu is widespread throughout the state, and eastern Kentucky is no exception. This month, over 400 cases of flu have been identified at Pikeville Medical Center, and at this time, the virus continues to spread.

In response, PMC has now opened a Flu Clinic in the Family Practice Building to take care of the growing number of patients with flu who may have gone to the Wal-Mart Clinic or the Emergency Department.

The Flu Clinic is located at 184 South Mayo Trail next to the Landmark Inn in Pikeville. The clinic will be open Monday through Friday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Christmas Eve 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed Christmas Day.

“The Flu Clinic will allow us to treat the growing number of flu patients more efficiently,” said PMC President/CEO Walter E. May. “Our physicians and support staff are well-equipped to handle the influx of patients quicker and with the utmost care.”

PMC Chief Nursing Officer Michelle Rainey says common flu symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headaches, body aches, chills, fatigue, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea. The common cold and flu share many of the same symptoms, but symptoms are typically more intense with the flu.

“At PMC, we are urging everyone to keep in mind that the flu season is here,” said Rainey. “Please ensure you are practicing good hand hygiene along with safety precautions such as wearing a mask while in public. If you or a family member are experiencing flu-like symptoms, please visit the PMC Flu Clinic.”

Patients of all ages are welcome at the Flu Clinic, and no appointment is necessary. The clinic accepts the same insurance and offers the same charity policies as the PMC Emergency Department. All patients will be seen regardless of their ability to pay.
