Police Officer Injured In Pursuit

Hazard, KY. — A Hazard City Police Officer was injured Thursday while pursuing a suspect. According to authorities, Officer Keith Gwin responded to a suspicious man complaint on Ky Hwy 15 on the bypass. As Officer Gwin approached the man, identified as 29-year-old Joshua Smith of Hazard, Smith ran and a foot pursuit began. Both Officer Gwin and Smith fell down a hill. Officer Gwin was injured and Smith continue to run. Members of the Perry County Sheriff’s Department arrived to assist and deployed drones and quickly located Smith. Smith has been charged with fleeing or evading, resisting arrest, wanton endangerment, trafficking controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, disorderly conduct among other charges. Smith was lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail.
