Prestonsburg, Ky.–The PSC held the first of three public hearings Thursday on the Prestonsburg campus of Big Sandy Community and Technical College.
The hearing allowed for residents and political figures to express their concerns over Kentucky Power’s proposed 16% rate increase, an increase that many say the people of Southeastern Kentucky cannot absorb.

Larry Brown: “It affects everyone in our area; I mean Republican, Democrat, Independent I don’t care who they are it affects us all. It cuts a broad swath across our region. When AEP is down there asking for a 63-milion dollar rate increase, to me that’s unconscionable and we have to do something about that to stop this.”

Patricia Stacey: “We are on fixed incomes mostly and you have to decide what to buy, what not to buy, which bill to pay and which one you can drag on a little longer in the month. Gee I’d love to own a jet and fly to Paris, but there’s no way I could do that and it really makes me sad to hear that’s what these officials of these big companies are doing when there are so many people hurting in our area.”

The second PSC public hearing will be held Monday, November 6th at 5:30pm in the Perry Central High School Auditorium in Hazard and the third public hearing is set for Wednesday, November 8th at 5:30pm in the Bellfonte Pavillion auditorium in Ashland.
