Frankfort, KY — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to set up 12 regional offices to issue special driver’s licenses that will be needed in less than a year to board domestic airline flights. Transportation Cabinet regulation commissioner Matt Henderson told state lawmakers this week that the state would eventually have 28-30 regional offices. The state faces an October 1, 2020 federal deadline to start issuing Real ID driver’s licenses. Henderson says the cost to operate and staff 28 regional offices would be about $16 million a year, but the sale of the special licenses would help defray the expenses. The licenses will cost $24.00 for four years and $48.00 for eight years.
