Skull found in Perry County cemetery identified

Skeletal remains found in a cemetery last year have been identified as those of a missing Perry County woman.

The Perry County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that a skull found in April 2017 in a cemetery at Viper is that of missing Perry County resident Maudie Smith. Smith was reported missing in February 2017.

According to a LEX-18 report, Smith’s remains were taken to Tennessee and Texas for help in positively identifying them. Kentucky State Police continues to investigate Smith’s death, of which a cause has not yet been determined.

Anyone with information on Maudie Smith’s death is asked to contact Kentucky State Police Post 13 in Hazard.
