Volunteers needed for historic cemetery cleanup

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Pike County Tourism Convention and Visitors Bureau is in need of volunteers for this weekend.

City and county officials are volunteering for a cleanup at Dils Cemetery on Friday and Saturday and many more volunteers are needed. The Hatfield and McCoy descendants will be among those working to clean and restore the cemetery, which was recently damaged by a storm.

Those helping will be picking up and cleaning, raking and removing debris and brush from the historic site. The cemetery is known as one of Kentucky’s first fully integrated cemeteries. Many of the graves located on the cemetery belong to unknown Civil War soldiers, and members of both the Hatfield and the McCoy families.

The goal is to have the cemetery restored for Memorial Day weekend.

For more information, or to volunteer, contact the Pike County Tourism CVB Executive Director Tony Tackett at 606-432-5063.
