VSP Participating In C.A.R.E.

Richmond, VA — The busiest time on area roadways is during the Thanksgiving holiday, that according to the Virginia State Police. AAA predicts nearly 50 million people will be driving 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving season, the most forecasted since 2005. Every year, Virginia State Police takes part in Operation C.A.R.E. The initiative stands for Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort. Nearly 75 percent of Virginia State Troopers will be out on the roads, especially on interstates, during the heaviest travel days which are this Wednesday and this coming Sunday. During that time period last year, Virginia State Police cited nearly 8,000 speeders, more than 2,000 reckless drivers. Hundreds of others were cited for not wearing a seat belt and violating child seat safety laws. 102 drunk drivers were arrested. According to the Virginia State Police, last Thanksgiving there were 12 traffic fatalities reported in Virginia.
