WILLIAMSON, W.Va. — The Williamson Woman’s Club is celebrating 90 years of serving its community.
The General Federation of Women’s Clubs was chartered in 1904 and consists of 80 clubs across West Virginia, with more than 2,000 members. The G.F.W.C. West Virginia Williamson Woman’s Club originated in 1927 and has more than 50 active members.
“We are the ones that you go to when you need volunteers, learning opportunities, cultural things to happen,” said club president Chris Dotson. “We do various things for the city, whether we are the actual hostess of the event or if we’re giving a monetary donation to support an event. We try to keep our members involved in any aspect of the community and the city. We reach out into other communities. We try to make sure that we are doing everything we can to live the volunteer spirit as our club directs us.”
Dotson adds that any club celebrating 90 years is worthy of celebration.
“A lot of clubs go through their ups and downs and sometimes they fall,” said Dotson. “But, our club has been a strong influence in our community for going on 91 years. I give that credit to the members. We have wonderful, strong women.”
The members of the Williamson Woman’s Club have rolls in just about every event going on in the City of Williamson, Mingo County and sometimes even across the Tug River in neighboring Pike County.
“We do baskets for Thanksgiving for local veterans. We do back-to school supplies. We donate to our garden club and to other civic organizations in the city. Anywhere that you see an event happening in Williamson or something going on, most-likely, our Williamson Woman’s Club has been involved in some way.”
New members will be initiated into the Williamson Woman’s Club in August.
