100th birthday surprise canceled, community provides “drive-by” parade

Elzie Smith, a Pike County woman turned 100 years old today. Close friends and family had planned a surprise birthday party, but due to the COVID-19 outbreak and social distancing guidelines, the party had to be canceled.

Instead, they decided to schedule a drive-by parade for Elzie so they can still celebrate her birthday but in a safer, healthier way.

A Facebook post created by Sandy West Reed is as follows :

Attention Canada/Sidney/Belfry neighbors, friends & family of Elzie Smith:

Monday, April 6th is Elzie’s 100th birthday and we want to make her day super special while keeping her safe practicing social distancing!

Since her surprise party had to be canceled, we want to celebrate her life and show her some love!

We will be decorating her yard in the morning and would love to invite you to join us at 1:00 for a surprise birthday parade!!

Here are the details:

EVERYONE is to stay in their car/on their ATV!!

  • You can roll down the window and yell happy birthday, honk the horn, etc. while she sits safely on the porch.
  • Everyone will meet in the old parking lot by the mines at 1:00 (in front of Jean Ann’s old house…about 3 miles up Meathouse). We will leave from there and follow the fire truck up!

Sandy also adds that you can decorate your car with balloons, streamers, and/or posters to help Elzie celebrate this milestone of life.
