PIKEVILLE, Ky. – As the weather gets warmer, inmates at the Pike County Detention Center will be spending more time outside. Jailer Brian Morris recently announced that 25% of inmates at the jail are now in the work release program, working at the animal shelter, solid waste department and cleaning up the county parks in addition to picking up trash along the roads in Pike County. The state pays the county for every bag of garbage picked up by inmates. In February alone, inmates picked up more than 2,600 bags of garbage from alongside the road, resulting in a payment to Pike County of nearly $10,500 dollars. The Pike County Detention Center is also in the process of starting a garden that will be grown and maintained by inmates. Morris says they will be able to grow their own vegetables to feed the inmates, which will result in a cost savings to taxpayers.
