Around 11:30 Friday night, a sheriff’s deputy was patrolling Tackett Hollow at Melvin, when he spotted a car pull onto the road from Route 466, then immediately back out into the path of another car and take off after spotting the police car. That prompted the deputy to attempt to pull the car over, but it sped away instead, leading along Route 466 and Route 122 at speeds of up to 80 mph.

When reaching the Pike County line at the top of Abner Mountain, the driver made a sudden U-turn and proceeded back into Floyd County. The chase ended when the driver attempted to pull into a driveway and bottomed out his car.

The driver, identified as Jeffery Hunter, 36, of Melvin, was then taken into custody after a brief struggle, and police found a syringe of meth in his pocket. Police also discovered a passenger in the car who was six months pregnant.

Hunter refused a blood test, but he was charged with DUI anyway, along with fleeing police, wanton endangerment and other charges.
