School employee arrested for being intoxicated at work

UPDATE: Following our initial report, the school district released a statement saying, “Floyd County Schools takes this matter very seriously and is committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for our students and staff. We are cooperating fully with local authorities and will follow our district protocols regarding employee conduct.”

EASTERN, Ky. — An employee of Duff-Allen Central Elementary in Floyd County was arrested at school Monday, after he was reported to be intoxicated on the job.

A sheriff’s deputy was dispatched the school around 2:30 p.m. Monday, after staff members told the principal that they could smell alcohol on Gregory Neil Allen, 40, of Hueysville, who is an aide at the school.

The deputy who spoke to Allen wrote in his report that he could also smell alcohol coming from him and noted that his eyes were bloodshot as well.

The police report says Allen then failed two sobriety tests, but maintained that he had not been drinking and that he had no alcohol on school grounds, and he offered to let the deputy search his car to prove it. When the deputy searched the car, he found two Bud Light cans and a metal drink container that had a small amount of alcohol in it.

Following that discovery, Allen allegedly asked the deputy if he could keep his job if he got help with his drinking.

He was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of alcohol intoxication.
