PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The mountain rivalry will take center stage in the regional championship as the Pikeville Panthers and the Johnson Central Golden Eagles punched their tickets to the finals of the 15th Region Boys Basketball Tournament.
Both teams advanced with strong semifinal performances, setting up a highly anticipated showdown between two of Eastern Kentucky’s most successful programs.
For Pikeville Panthers, the trip to the championship game continues a season marked by disciplined defense and timely scoring. The Panthers controlled the tempo in their semifinal matchup, using defensive pressure and balanced offense to secure their spot in the finals. Pikeville’s ability to limit turnovers and convert key possessions proved critical down the stretch as they pulled away late.
Meanwhile, the Johnson Central Golden Eagles earned their place in the title game with a strong showing of their own. The Golden Eagles leaned on physical play in the paint and efficient shooting to outlast their opponent in the semifinals. Their depth and rebounding advantage helped them maintain control throughout much of the contest.
Now the stage is set for a regional championship battle between two familiar foes from the mountains of eastern Kentucky. The matchup also brings together neighboring communities from Pikeville and Paintsville, adding even more energy to a game that already carries high stakes.
With a regional title on the line and a berth in the KHSAA Sweet 16 awaiting the winner, both teams will look to bring their best to the court.
Tip-off for the championship Monday promises a packed gym, loud student sections, and another chapter in the competitive basketball tradition.
Tip off will at 7 p.m. at the Appalachian Wireless Arena in Pikeville.
