15th Region baseball All “A” Classic semifinals breakdown

Belfry – 4, Shelby Valley – 1

The Pirates held off the Wildcats behind a historic performance from starting pitcher Chase Varney. The senior right-hander broke the Belfry single game strikeout record with 17 strikeouts! Given there are only 21 outs in a seven-inning game, this is one of the best pitching performances in 15th Region baseball history. Varney only allowed 1 earned run, 3 hits, and walked 2 batters in 7 innings on 101 pitches. He also got it done at the plate, going 2-4 with a double.

Pikeville – 15, East Ridge – 0

Pikeville cruised past East Ridge in a three-inning mercy rule win behind a dominant no-hit performance from their pitching staff. Isiah Coleman got the start on the mound for the Panthers. He pitched two full innings allowing no hits and no runs, with one walk and one strikeout. Zach McCoy shut down the Warriors after coming in to relieve Coleman in the third inning, striking out all three batters he faced.

The bats were hot for Pikeville as well. They tallied nine hits and 15 earned runs in only 19 at bats with 10 different Panthers coming around to score. They were also nine for nine on stolen base attempts. This was an all-around performance for Coach Simpkins’ squad; they scored five runs in the first inning before recording their first out of the game.
