PIKE COUNTY, Ky. — State officials in Frankfort are taking issue with the official story being offered by Pike County officials for why property tax bills skyrocketed for many residents this year. During a meeting last week, county officials said their hands were tied by a change in how oil, gas and unmined coal taxes are assessed, leading Frankfort to mandate drastically higher rates for other taxpayers. But officials with the Finance and Administration Cabinet and the Department of Revenue tell EKB News, that simply isn’t the case.

Officials with the two agencies further tell EKB News that local officials were made aware that the higher compensating rate would go into effect back in the summer.
