DELBARTON, W.Va. — Local law enforcement officials in Mingo County teamed up with school personnel Tuesday for a civilian based active shooter training class.

West Virginia State Police troopers were contacted by the Mingo County Board of Education to present information on how staff should react if there happened to be an active shooting scenario.

“[To] put out knowledge and provide knowledge in the worst case scenario that an active shooter situation took place in the school,”  said Sgt. Milton Lively of the West Virginia State Police Williamson Detachment.

Teachers and faculty members at each school in Mingo County were invited to attend the training at Mingo Central High School.

“I think it’s important for every area,” added Sgt. Lively. “If you look nationally, these types of situations and events occur way too often. It hasn’t occurred here within this area, as of yet, but it doesn’t mean we’re not immune from it. So, we want to be as trained and as knowledgeable as we can be and we also want the staff and faculty at our schools to be as informed as they can be.”

“There’s good communication between the board of education here in Mingo County and law enforcement and that helps out a whole lot in facilitating things like this,” said Sgt. Lively.

Over 300 people attended Tuesday’s training.
