MEALLY, KY.–Around 8pm Wednesday the Johsnon County Sheriff’s Department received a call of gunshots being fired in the Meally area. The caller stated that when they looked outside they saw two vehicles in a ditch and two men running around the car with guns.

When Deputies and officers with the Paintsville City Police Department arrived on the scene they found 47-year old Tatarkoda Baxter of Richmond and 33-year old Jonathan Mayhan of Hagerhill were armed with handguns.

According to the arrest citation, Mayhan told officers that Baxter followed him from O’Reilly’s Auto Parts to Meally Church of Christ, where he pulled over to see what Baxter wanted. That’s when Mayhan claims Baxter tried to run him over and when Mayhan opened fire on him, causing him to crash his car into a ditch. He went on to say that a man came out of his home and stopped the two from fighting.

“I looked out my door after I heard 4 or 5 gunshots. I saw one car in the ditch here and a red Jeep sitting over here and a guy walking around the Jeep pointing his pistol at the other guy. Kids live over across the road from me and there are kids living over here in this trailer park, so I went back inside and got my pistol, went out back next to my phone poll with my flashlight and my pistol and I told the guy to put his gun down and get on his face. The other guy came walking over toward me, I told him to stop and seen he had a pistol. I made him put it on the ground and made him interlace his hands and put them his head until the cops got here.”

Both men were arrested and charged with 1st degree wanton endangerment.
